Allegro, Andante – Waltz – Andante, Allegro
In 1961, having completed a 3-year scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music, Howard
Blake scripted and directed a 16-minute black and white film called 'A Few Days' for
which he composed a score for flute, clarinet and harp. The film was shown at the
National Film Theatre on April 25th 1963 and later acquired by The British Film
Institute Film Library. Later, at the request of Chappell’s Educational music publishers,
Howard developed musical ideas from the film to create a chamber work for piano trio.
Gabrielle Byam-Grounds wrote of it: The two light-hearted outer movements frame two
Andante sections which in turn enclose a Waltz. The quirky harmonies seem to evoke a
more painful side of life, but this is firmly brushed away by the sparkling semi-quavers of
the final Allegro.’ This transcription for flute, viola and harp was made in 2013.
