Composer's note: After the performance I was honoured to have lunch in the refectory of York Minster with two archbishops- John Hapgood and George Carey - with whom I discussed hymn texts at some length, agreeing that George Herbert's are incomparable and causing me to embark on 'Songs of Truth and Glory' some years later.
