A haunting theme that has haunted the composer, invented for soprano vocalise, flute and piano and first performed by William Bennett, Elizabeth Muir and Janet Cannetty-Clarke in the Wigmore Hall 1977, it later evolved into the first movement of the concerto for clarinet and chamber orchestra 1984 premiered by Thea King and the ECO at the QEH. In another incarnation it translated into an instrumental work for flute , clarinet and piano rewritten for the Sterling Trio in 2009.
