First Performance: This work was first commissioned and composed by Howard Blake in 1962 as a solo piece for the Brighton-based pianist Clive Lythgoe, who had his own solo piano TV programme on Southern TV at that time. Howard Blake composed it and first titled it 'Rhapsody for Young Lovers' in which name it was originally registered with PRS/MCPS. In 1964, after some succesful solo performances, an orchestral version called 'Rhapsody for a Summer's Night' was requested from composer Howard Blake which Clive Lythgoe also performed. This version was later taken up by star BBC pianist Semprini and performed by him with BBC orchestras on radio.
